A Classic Day in Newport - Saturday May 16th
Tour of the Elms, Luncheon and Cliff Walk
Join us for a wonderful day in Newport. Rhode Island newcomers and lifers alike will enjoy Newport's coastal beauty, the Gilded Age glory of The Elms, and getting to know other local Harvard alums.
The Elms, a Gilded Age mansion was modeled after an 18th-century French chateau but featured the latest technology of the time. It houses an outstanding collection of paintings, statuary and tapestries, and its landscape features formal gardens, terraces, pavilions and fountains. Our tour of The Elms will be self-guided audio. Hear fascinating first-person accounts of life in this Gilded Age gem, built for entertaining and as a showcase for art, but with every modern convenience available at the turn of the 20th century. The Elms tour also provides new information about recent restoration projects in the house and about servant life.
After about 90 minutes of touring The Elms, we will gather for luncheon at the newly restored The Carriage House at The Elms, a lovely newly restored restaurant on the mansion grounds overlooking the historic Elms gardens. Everyone will pay for their own food and drink.
After luncheon, weather permitting, interested club members and guests will cap off our day in Newport with a stroll along a portion of the justly famous Newport Cliff Walk. Be sure to bring comfy shoes and an extra layer for those Atlantic breezes!
Logistics:
- After parking our vehicles in the lot next to The Elms, we will gather at 9:30 am on Saturday, May 16th at the entrance to The Elms, 367 Bellevue Avenue, Newport.
- Club members and guests should purchase tickets either in advance via www.newportmansions.org or at The Elms immediately prior to our tour. Per person ticket prices are $25 for adults, and $10 for children 6 to 12.
- Tour participants should plan to download "The Elms Audio Tour" (which can be found in the "Self-Guided Tours" section of The Newport Mansions website) and to bring their own phone/tablet and headphones or earbuds.
