    Join amateur historian Jon Edwards on a narrated walking tour of downtown Newport as we explore the rich history of the City of Newport from its Wampanoag origins through its Colonial and Revolutionary War periods. Along the way, the walking tour will stop at a number of important historical buildings and sites in Newport, including Trinity Church; the site of the Newport Slave Market; British Maj. General Prescott’s Headquarters; French General Rochambeau’s Headquarters; Colony House (seat of Rhode Island’s Colonial Government); Home of the British Stamp Tax Collector sacked by the Patriots; White Horse Tavern (run by notorious Newport pirate, William Mayes); Site of Revolutionary Newport’s Liberty Tree; and the Grave Sites of noteworthy citizens of Colonial and Revolutionary Newport. We will meet to begin the tour at the small public park immediately fronting Trinity Church, 1 Queen Anne Square, Newport 02840. A convenient place to park is the public lot on Mary Street, next to the church. In case of rain, this event will be held on May 18th at 10AM.
