Vincent Scully - Architecture, Urbanism, and a Life in Search of Community

Discussion with Author Krista Sykes, Ph.D'04 at the historic Redwood Library & Athenaeum

Founded in 1747 on the Enlightenment ideals of intellectual pursuit and civic engagement, and committed to lifelong, interdisciplinary learning, the Redwood Library & Athenæum generates knowledge in the humanities for the benefit of the widest possible audience with “nothing in view but the good of mankind".

On Thursday March 7th join us at the Redwood for the release of the new biography of noted architectural scholar Vincent Scully by Krista Sykes Ph.D'04. The story of an era, Vincent Scully's biography illuminates our understanding of the state of architecture and cities today. Beloved professor and public intellectual, he was dedicated to initiating the public into the sometime arcane world of architecture and architects. He exerted an unprecedented influence as a historian on the turn of events of his own time, with expansive knowledge and empathy for his subjects, and the conviction that past and present are one.

"Krista Sykes's carefully-researched book on Vincent Scully beautifully captures his unparalleled ability to ignite the imagination of his students with his eloquence, passion for architecture, and concern with social justice that made his lectures electrifying and his writings a call to action."

Dr. Sykes will speak beginning at 6:00pm with a reception to follow from approximately 6:45-7:30pm. Books will be available for purchase and autograph during the reception. Ticket price: $20. Address: 50 Bellevue Ave, Newport RI 02840.
